Sepultura

Profile:
A Brazilian metal band founded in 1984 in Belo Horizonte by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. Sepultura is one of Brazil's most famous cultural exports and has become one of the most famous thrash/death metal bands in the world.

Group's first stable recording line-up was established in 1985 and included Max on guitar/vocals, Igor on drums, Jairo T. on lead guitar and Paulo Jr. on bass. Jairo T. left the band in 1986 and was replaced by Andreas Kisser. This line-up is often considered as the "classic" Sepultura line-up that was together until 1996 when Max Cavalera left the band over a disagreement. Derrick Green took over the vocals in 1998.

Igor Cavalera left the band in 2006 due to incompatibility of thoughts with the other members. He was first replaced by Jean Dolabella, who was then replaced by Eloy Casagrande in 2011.

The music of SEPULTURA is divided in 3 eras:
1. 1985-1986 extreme music (death metal / black metal) era
2. 1987-1996 thrash metal era (Max Cavalera - Andreas Kisser tandem)
3. 1998-now era (with their new vocalist)

1. In their first era, they were one of that time not many bands playing extreme music, their EP from 1985 which is actually a split LP with another band was recorded without a bass drum according to Wikipedia (they turned the floor tom into a bass drum) and on their 1st album from 1986 they forgot to tune the guitars before recording it (both of these 2 studio recordings sound like a solid demo), 1 song from this era from their 1st album got into listeners ears, "Troops of doom", which was later re-recorded during the recording of their 4th album and this version of the mentioned song was put on the original CD release of their 2nd album as a bonus track.

2. The best era of SEPULTURA:
- on their 2nd album from 1987 their vocalist and guitarist Max Cavalera and their (new) guitarist Andreas Kisser created their sound
- their 3rd album from 1989 is obvious musical progress and has some really good songs (I like 4 of them)
- their 4th album from 1991 is again musical progress with a better sound and has some really good songs too (I like 5 of them)
- on their 5th album from 1993 they changed their sounds and style (this album is my favorite from them)
- on their 6th album from 1996 they again changed their sounds and style (I like 2 songs and 1 song is solid)

My favorite album from SEPULTURA is their 5th one (from 1993); but my favorite music from them is 5 songs of 9 from their 4th album (from 1991) and 4 songs of 9 from their 3rd album (from 1989)! I assume that before the recording of their 6th album (from 1996) they had 2 or 3 songs written and that the other songs were composed really quickly in the studio.

3. First album(s) from their last era, which started in 1998 with a new vocalist, sound kinda strange (the music sounds strange and the vocals sound strange), they improved their music and vocals on their last albums, but in IMO this music will be liked only by the people who are still fans of the band and the people who like this style of metal that they're playing.

P.S.: Max Cavalera didn't legally protect the name SEPULTURA, so when he left the band, the other members were not forbidden to use the name of the band on their next albums (otherwise Max Cavalera would be able to disband the band and the band would cease to exist). SOULFY, the next band from Max Cavalera got closest to the music quality of SEPULTURA from 1987-1996 era (but a big part of the sound from this era is missed in the music of his mentioned next band).
